Strengths Perspective

At Patrick Henry Family Services we employ Strength-Based Perspective whenproviding services to children and families.  This emphasis on assets rather than deficits is a positive approach that stands in stark contrast to the Medical model used at other facilities.

“The strengths perspective demands a different way of looking at individuals, families, and communities. All must be seen in the light of their capacities, talents, competencies, possibilities, visions, values and hopes, however, dashed and distorted through circumstance, oppression, and trauma. The strengths approach requires an accounting of what people know and can do, however small that may sometimes seem.”

We do this in three ways. 1. We view each person as a unique individual, created by God, with their own special interest, talents, and purpose in life.  2. Every child and family that comes for help must be empowered to make their own changes.  3. We believe resources are everywhere. There is no person, environment, or situation where there are absolutely no resources for change.

Take Away: The strengths approach requires an accounting of what people know and can do, however small that may sometimes seem.
